Balfour Castle offers an old fashioned experience, but this is a place where you can truly get away from it all. You will be offered the warmest of welcomes from the family who also live in the castle and you will be made to feel truly at home.
Balfour Castle sits on a wooded brae only hundreds of yards from the sea. A quiet and peaceful place, an elegant Victorian structure, full of style and elegance and now a private family home open to guests who appreciate something out of the ordinary.
Perhaps the greatest escape of all, this imposing, turreted building is billed as, 'The most Northerly Castle Hotel in the World'. There are two private islands, 10 miles of private coastline, and lots of delicious food, all caught, grown, milked, hatched or otherwise procured within hailing distance of the castle. Its staff can rustle up fires, tea, toast and electric blankets and anything else a walker on the island might require upon his or her return.
The Castle, complete with original furniture, dates back to the 1840s and guests have access to its main rooms of library, dining room, drawing room with adjoining conservatory.
Inside the 52 roomed Castle you have access to the rooms on the middle floor. Dining room, drawing room with adjoining conservatory, library and gallery. The library is the meeting place before dinner in the evening and there you will find a small bar. Dinner and breakfast is taken in the Dining Room with wonderful views over the sea to St. Magnus Cathedral.
The area surrounding the Castle is wooded and guests are very welcome to wander there at their leisure. In the midst of the wood you will discover a two acre walled kitchen garden where most of the vegetables for dinner are cultivated. You can walk along the shoreline in front of the castle where you may discover the whereabouts of an iron age Farmhouse. In fact throughout the island there is evidence of peoples who lived here before us.
Balfour Castle with its chapel also provides a truly exceptional venue for small, intimate wedding parties. With reception facilities available in either the Castle's Drawing Room or Conservatory, and the ultimate romantic experience of our Bridal Suite, why not contact us here to discuss your very special requirements.
